Job Description
 
We provide daily coverage of breaking news and longer-form features about the wireless, wireline, broadcast and streaming sectors, as well as privacy, copyright and other issues related to emerging Internet law.  That includes reporting on the latest developments on Parliament Hill, at the CRTC and the courts, and he latest news from Canada’s telecom and media companies.  When the second largest telecom company in the country announces it wants to buy the fourth largest, or when a major network crashes and other news outlets are trying to figure out who the players are in the sector, that’s when we dig deeper.
 
The Wire Report stories are a mix of business, political, regulatory and legal reporting.  We work to break important telecom-related news first whenever possible, to provide our readers with the most thorough coverage of ongoing regulatory files, and to regularly publish exclusives based on legal fillings to access-to-information and source-based reporting. 
 
Responsibilities
 
On a daily basis, the editor job involves assigning stories to reporters, doing your own daily or feature reporting. editing of reporters’ work, and publishing stories online.  The editor is responsible for the editorial quality of The Wire Report.  They ensure each story is accurate, consistent with our style guide, and meets our journalistic standards, and that our coverage of Canadian telecom and media remains unparalleled.
 
The editor is responsible for filing short briefs, breaking and daily stories, and in-depth analysis pieces, on deadline and with clean copy that requires minimal editing.  The editor sets the standard for quality reporting in their own work, developing relationships with industry and government sources, and regularly files scoops and exclusives.
 
The editor is responsible for substantive editing of reporters’ stories and feedback on story developments, as well copy editing finished work for grammar, style, and readability; screening copy for potential legal issues, factual mistakes and misleading statements.
 
The editor also works to increase the reach of The Wire Report, on social media and through public events like moderating conference panels and media interviews.

Qualifications

  • Experienced news reporter and editor.
  • Relevant education.
  • A passion for covering this beat.
  • A keen interest in leading a small but influential newsroom.
  • An understanding of the federal courts, legislative process and the workings of the CRTC are an asset.
