ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The Media Manager is responsible for leading the Canadian communications efforts by developing and executing social media and media strategies, and pitching media, with an expanded focus on earned media coverage in local markets. The Media Manager works with the broader North America Communications team to execute ONE’s media strategy in North America. The Media Manager will be an experienced communications professional with a demonstrated interest in development issues and the ability to communicate complex issues concisely. They will use their creative intelligence to help us increase the media’s coverage of international development, influencing policy change through the media. Experience of working with development journalists within the Canadian media and existing contacts in this field would be a distinct advantage.

The Media Manager, based in Canada, is an important role within the North America Advocacy Team and reports directly to the Canada Director.

This temporary cover lasts from November 2021 to March 2022. Application deadline is end of day on October 25th and the position has a target start date of Monday, November 8th. Please submit a resume and cover letter to this opening.

 

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL

  • Develop and manage media campaigns in close cooperation with the Canada team, and global teams as needed
  • Support the Canada Director by creating a strategy to strengthen their role as national spokesperson for ONE in Canada
  • Assist with the development of strategic communications plans for projects in Canada, with the coordination of global communications projects
  • Generate an effective annual media strategy that is integrated into the Global Annual Plan (GAP), to earn news coverage and shape news coverage through press releases, blog posts, letters to the editor, op-eds, talking points and other messaging materials
  • Develop and manage media lists, including journalists, reporters, media organizations, reporters/editors in national and local media markets Develop expert knowledge of ONE policies, campaigns and evolving political environment at the national and state levels
  • Post news releases and relevant content to the ONE website
  • Track and monitor media coverage of ONE and its issue
  • Develop relationships with, and devise media strategies for, local ONE staff and members
  • Strategically manage messaging and content for online and social media platforms i.e. Twitter, Facebook etc.
  • Integrate media and supporter engagement strategies in the development of ONE’s global and national campaigns, including planning, messaging and tactics
  • Manage the production of supporter communications, working with the Global Campaigns team, and country campaign managers and others as required
  • Create campaign assets, analyze campaign performance and provide reports to other teams in collaboration with the wider Engagement & Mobilization and Communications & Content teams.
  • Supervise and guide the work of the Campaigns Coordinator
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

WHAT YOU BRING TO ONE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Political Science, Public Relations or related field preferred
  • A minimum of six years’ relevant professional experience preferably within a PR agency, policymaker or political organization, non-profit organization, newsroom, or similar environment
  • Proven track record in pitching securing earned news coverage in mainstream media outlets
  • Strong, established relationships with journalists, especially in Canada
  • Strong knowledge of, and interest in, Canadian politics, foreign affairs and/or global development
  • Ability to work effectively, independently and in a team environment
  • Willingness and ability to travel and work a flexible schedule
  • Ability to consistently apply good judgment and make good and responsible decisions
  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality regarding all aspects of work at all times
  • Legal authorization to work in Canada without restrictions
