We are currently seeking a dynamic and dedicated Political Reporter to join our team, and cover the ever-changing world of the federal government.

Job Description: Are you a passionate and driven journalist with a keen interest in Canadian politics? If so, The Hill Times has an exciting opportunity for you to become our new Political Reporter, spending time on Parliament Hill to offer exclusive coverage. We are searching for a reporter with previous experience covering politics.

Key Responsibilities:

  • File three exclusive, in-depth stories per week that take the pulse of Parliament Hill but go beyond the daily headlines.
  • Develop a strong network of sources among politicians, political and parliamentary staff, lobbyists, advocacy groups, public servants, and policymakers to gather exclusive information and scoops.
  • Write engaging, well-researched articles, and think outside the box on creative ways to present stories online.
  • Offer flexibility and be able to pivot on short notice to cover breaking news.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to contribute to the overall political coverage of The Hill Times.
  • Participate in editorial meetings and pitch story ideas that align with the publication’s editorial strategy.
  • Maintain The Hill Times’ ethical standards for journalists.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years journalism experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, political science, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in reporting, with a track record of breaking news stories.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a fast-paced newsroom environment.
  • A deep understanding of Canadian politics and government operations.
  • Willingness to adapt to new reporting technologies and tools.
  • Mastery of CP style.
