Daley of Chicago and Mayor David Miller of Toronto the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative represents and works with a binational coalition of 128 U.S. and Canadian Mayors and local officials to advance protection, preservation and restoration of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River at the local, regional and basin-wide levels. Members of the Cities Initiative work together and with other orders of government and stakeholders to improve infrastructure, programs and services and increase investments that protect and restore this globally significant freshwater resource. To deliver on its mandate and further strengthen its profile and representation, Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative is seeking a Senior Policy Advisor – Canada who will lead advocacy, policy and awareness efforts from Canada.

Reporting to the Executive Director, Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, the Senior Policy Advisor will gather information, conduct analysis, produce summaries, develop policy initiatives and support Cities Initiative staff in advocacy and policy work in the areas of environment, ecology, climate adaptation, drinking and waste water, municipal infrastructure, and other water-based issues for municipal governments within the watershed. To this end, the Senior Policy Advisor will liaise with elected officials and their staff at the provincial and federal levels as well as key government ministries such as Natural Resources Canada, Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, and Environment and Climate Change Canada to monitor and inform policy development and foster meaningful relationships. On the ground in Ottawa, the Senior Policy Advisor will be a key resource to Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative’s U.S. office to ensure harmonization of public policy, advocacy and regulatory standards between the U.S. and Canada.

As the ideal candidate, you are a trusted, respected, fluently bilingual advocate with significant experience interfacing with the federal and provincial governments. Your experience with the regulatory process and lobbying government officials and parliamentarians, will be valued, as would your knowledge and understanding of the Canadian environmental and water regulatory system. As a colleague, you are known to display exceptional planning and organizational skills as well as strong interpersonal, presentation and oral/written communication skills in both official languages. You are a proven strategic leader and team player who demonstrates great initiative, integrity and a bias to action.
