About Us

The Canadian Media Producers Association is Canada’s national trade association for independent English-language media producers. We represent hundreds of companies engaged in the development, production and distribution of English-language content for TV, feature film and digital media channels.

The CMPA is currently seeking a talented and experienced Director, Policy and Research to join our dynamic organization. Reporting to the Senior Vice-President, Industry, Policy and General Counsel, the Director, Policy and Research is responsible for identifying potential impacts and opportunities through analysis, assessments and recommendations in support of the CMPA’s strategic goals.

The CMPA’s Policy and Research mandate is to ensure the timely and accurate dissemination of proactive and reactive information to support the development of CMPA policy and advocacy on behalf of the members (in collaboration with other functions across the organization) in response to government and industry shifts related to screen-based media.

 

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Monitor, report and provide strategic information to senior management on existing and proposed government policies as they relate to the independent production sector’s regulatory environment.

Assist in policy development and submissions to government, regulatory agencies and production funding bodies.

Prepare briefing memos, correspondence and research papers; develop presentations for use by senior management in decision-making and/or to present to the Board of Directors.

Foster and maintain constructive relationships with industry stakeholder organizations, CMPA members and relevant federal and provincial government departments; attending meetings to discuss and strategize on policy development.

Prep CMPA staff and/or board members for public hearings or presentations.

Evaluate key issues; Summarize research findings and outline interpretations of research results; prepare reports, research papers, briefing notes, correspondence; Study and report on emerging trends and their impact on the film, television and digital media industries and/or the CMPA’s strategic priorities; Incorporate findings into information products; and, make research recommendations and prepare briefings that will support the CMPA’s strategic priorities.

In collaboration with other CMPA staff, recommend methodologies required to collect, analyze, synthesize and produce knowledge and information; conducting research pursuant to the Research Plan, including the design and execution of surveys; and, initiating and participating in research partnerships and collaborations.

Develop an annual Research Plan in consultation with the senior CMPA staff. Such a Plan will include, but not necessarily be limited to, the identification of priority research projects to be accomplished throughout the year, the estimated cost for each project as well as the proposed means for carrying them out (e.g., undertaking them in-house, contracting an outside firm and/or working in partnership with other stakeholders).

Oversee and participate in the development of an inventory and database of relevant research reports, from both domestic and foreign sources, organized in a meaningful fashion and easily searchable and accessible by the CMPA staff.

Project manage and participate in producing Profile: An Economic Report on the Screen-based Media Production Industry in Canada, the CMPA’s annual statistical publication on the Canadian screen-based production industry produced in partnership with the Department of Canadian Heritage, Telefilm Canada and the AQPM.

Act as a bridge with government relations, business affairs and communications departments to develop and execute on policy-related priorities.

Support the Senior Vice-President, Industry, Policy and General Counsel by playing an active role in the CMPA’s policy and regulatory work as well as other priority initiatives and projects of the organization.

Support and carry out duties as may be required from time to time and in keeping with the level of the position.

 

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

The following competencies and skillsets are required for this position:

Possess a university degree in communications, public policy, government relations, political science, or a similar area of study.

Minimum of three (3) years relevant experience in regulatory, media or cultural policy
in Canada.

Knowledge of, or interest in, the business of producing film, television and digital media content, and the related industries for delivering that content to consumers particularly in Canada would be an asset.

Knowledge of the CMPA’s mandate, and the organization’s connection to other industry associations and relevant government departments and Crown Corporations and/or agencies would be an asset in order to undertake research activities in support of the CMPA’s strategic objectives.

Knowledge qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and techniques.

Strategic and analytical thinking.

Strong aptitude for initiating and leading projects.

Superior ability to prioritize, organize and manage a multitude of projects concurrently.

Ability to work effectively, both independently and as part of a team, in an inclusive and collaborative manner.

Proficiency with the English language at a high professional level (i.e., verbal, written and comprehension) is considered a minimum qualification.

A working ability with the French language (i.e., verbal, written and comprehension) is considered an asset.

Strong proficiency with Office Suite, such as Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel.

LOCATION: Full time position based in Ottawa, Ontario. Currently remote work-from-home/office hybrid schedule
